Is it time for yet another throwback limited-production hypercar?

Swedish hypercar manufacturer Koenigsegg has brought in 2022 by posting a single shadowy teaser image on Instagram of an upcoming model set to be revealed this year.

This new model is said to bring “more ultimate performance through clever engineering and optimal design”.

Details of this new Koenigsegg hypercar are few and far between at the moment, with the teaser image only showing the side profile of the car.

The teased car has an identifiable Koenigsegg silhouette, although it is slightly squarer than the current Jesko, Regera and upcoming Gemera.

We think this car has elements that hark back to the Koenigsegg CC-era, which would be fitting as it’s 20 years since the original CC8S was produced.

Only six CC8S models were ever made, each powered by a 4.7-litre supercharged Ford modular V8 producing 488kW of power.

The teased car’s front section has a low splitter attached to the front bumper, with a curved bonnet that sweeps up to the tear-drop-shaped cabin.

The roof cascades almost to the rear of the car with a slightly arched shape. At the back there’s a glimpse of the LED tail-lights with a vertical running light signature, as well as a rear canard.

Almost all of these design cues are reminiscient of the CC8S, but reworked for the current era.

A number of hypercar manufacturers have gone down this route of rehashing the past design cues atop modern mechanicals.

For example, Bugatti Centodieci pays homage to the EB110 hypercar of the 1990s, but is based on the Chiron.

In mid-2021, Lamborghini revealed the Aventador-based Countach LPI 800-4, with all 112 examples sold out despite a price tag somewhere around the $5 million (AUD) mark.

It’s uncertain what will be under the bonnet of this new Koenigsegg hypercar, although the automaker may take elements from its existing lineup.

Revealed in 2019, the Jesko is powered by a 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that develops 941kW on 95-octane unleaded fuel, but rises to 1177kW if it’s fed E85.

Maximum torque is 1500Nm, with more than 1000Nm available between 2700 and 6170rpm.

The Jesko uses a nine-speed automated multi-clutch transmission, dubbed the Light Speed Transmission.

Revealed in 2015, the plug-in hybrid Regera is powered by a 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that’s paired to three YASA-developed electric motors, with a total system output of 1119kW.

The Regera’s electrified powertrain is paired with a proprietary Koenigsegg Direct Drive (KDD) transmission for the rear axle.

Lastly, the four-seater PHEV Gemera was revealed in 2020, but has yet to be put into production.

This 2+2 coupe is powered by a camless 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged three-cylinder engine along with three electric motors making a total of 1286kW.

The Gemera will be limited to 300 units when it goes into production.

Putting the powertrain technology to one side, this upcoming hypercar will most likely feature the automaker’s signature dihedral sychro-helix door mechanism like all Koenigsegg hypercars thus far.

Beyond this, it’s uncertain what technology the automaker will pack into this upcoming model. For now we’ll just have to wait and see.
