The new electric high-rider is long enough to fit the original Smart car between its wheels – with room to spare.
Smart – famous for its tiny city cars – has pulled the covers off an all-new electric SUV, dubbed the 2022 Smart #1.
The five-seater is closely based on the #1 Concept revealed last year, and will be built in China by joint owner Geely.
It’s so far unclear when order books will open, however overseas reports suggest sales will likely begin later this year.
Measuring 4270mm from nose to tail, the new vehicle is more than 70 per cent longer than the original 1998 Smart ForTwo – and roughly the same size as a contemporary Hyundai Kona (4205mm).
Unladen weight comes in at 1820kg – well over double that of the original Smart.
Drive comes from a single electric motor on the rear axle, sending 200kW/343Nm to the road via a single-speed transmission.
A 0-100km/h sprint time is yet to be announced, however overseas reports suggest a time of approximately 6.7 seconds. Top speed arrives at 180km/h.
A 66kWh battery pack permits an estimated maximum driving range of 420km to 440km on Europe’s WLTP test cycle.
Inside the cabin, infotainment comes via a centre-mounted 12.8-inch touchscreen, while a 9.2-inch digital cluster sits behind the steering wheel.
Tyres wrap around 19-inch alloy wheels at all four corners, separated by 2750mm between the axles – meaning an original Smart ForTwo can fit within its successor’s wheelbase with 200mm to spare.
Seven airbags are fitted as standard, as is adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive high beam lights, and automatic parking.
Geely purchased a 50 per cent stake in the Mercedes-owned Smart brand in 2019, and two years later the marque announced it would transition to an all-electric line-up.
It’s so far unclear when the 2023 Smart #1 is due to go on sale, however it’s unlikely to be offered in Australia when it does.
Smart pulled out of the local market in 2015, and a spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz previously told Drive there are no plans to reintroduce the brand.
“We are always open-minded and evaluate each new vehicle that becomes available to us, but at this stage there is nothing new to announce about the Smart brand,” the spokesperson said.
