After a transformative 2021, the GWM brand has a more sedate 2022 on its hands – though for the GWM group, things look to be gaining momentum.
In 2022 GWM looks set to give its range a huge boost – although not in the way you might expect. GWM as a group, which currently also includes Haval, is set to introduce electric vehicle brand Ora and off-road SUV brand Tank during the year.
Confirmed by the brand internationally, but with exact timing to be confirmed by the local arm, Ora looks set to open its EV range with a version of the Ora Good Cat (pictured, top) as it’s known is China, or GWM Ora Cat in the UK – the brand’s first right-hand-drive market.
Slotting in alongside the more road-oriented SUV range of the Haval brand, Tank looks set to offer a range of body-on-frame SUVs. Again, the local line-up is yet to be announced, but the Jeep Wrangler-esque Tank 300, and Toyota Prado rivalling Tank 500 (below) look like the most likely candidates for local showrooms.
Without turning its back on its traditional value positioning, the GWM brand (formerly Great Wall) reinvented itself as a mainstream ute brand during 2021.
The new GWM Ute signalled a much more competitive product than the Great Wall Steed it replaced. Not only that, but pricing that tops out at $42,490 drive-away for the top-spec 4×4 Cannon-X model – a price point more like that of base-model rivals – saw buyers keen to drive their dollar further flock to GWM showrooms.
The GWM Ute, so far, has only been offered as a dual-cab ute model, with a choice of 4×2 and 4×4 variants. In 2022 the range is set to expand further with the addition of more work-focused cab chassis trim levels.
Cab-chassis models are expected to share the same 2.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder engine as the current range, developing 120kW and 400Nm. Six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions have been certified for sale, though it’s unclear if one or both will be offered, with the current range auto-only so far.
